How to Cut a Watermelon
Watermelons are the star of the summer. But their size and thick rinds make them a challenge to cut! I’ll show you how to cut a watermelon 3 different ways.
First, we’ll cover the easiest way to slice them into perfect triangles. Then, we’ll make cute watermelon sticks. Last, we’ll cut them up into easy-to-eat cubes.
What you’ll need
You’ll need a sharp chef’s knife, a large cutting board, and a whole watermelon.
Method 1: How to cut a watermelon into triangles (slices)
This is the classic triangle slice with the rind on.
Wash and dry the melon. Then slice off both ends.
Stand it up on one end and cut it in half lengthwise.
Lay one of the halves cut side down. Then cut it in half lengthwise. You’ve broken in down into quarters!
Lay each of the quarters cut side down. Slice them into 1-inch thick slices.
Repeat with the other half.
Method 2: How to cut a watermelon into sticks
A fun, rind-on variation that makes a fantastic snack or cocktail garnish
Wash and dry the melon. Then slice off both ends.
Stand it up on one end and cut it in half lengthwise.
Lay one of the halves cut side down. Then make 1-inch slices.
Rotate it and make another set of 1-inch slices perpendicular to the first. It should look like a grid.
Repeat with the other half.
Method 3: How to cut a watermelon into cubes
Remove the rind and make ready-to-eat cubes that are great for snacking or ready to use in recipes!
Wash and dry the melon. Then slice off both ends.
Stand it up on one end. Begin slicing off the rind. Start at the top and cut downward, following the curve of the watermelon. Keep slicing to remove all the rind.
Lay the watermelon on its side and slice it into 1-inch wide circles.
Stack the melon circles a few high and cut them into 1-inch sticks. Rotate and cut again to make a grid.
Repeat with the remaining melon.
How to store it
Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 3-5 days. It will start to lose its juice as it sits. If you cut the slices ahead, you can arrange them on a platter. Then wrap them in plastic wrap, and refrigerate until ready to serve.
