Ingredients

  • A whole sweet potato acts as a binder for the treats and provides a nice dose of vitamins and minerals.
  • Whole wheat flour helps us stick to less refined ingredients for these treats.
  • Egg also helps bind the treats and provides protein and minerals.
  • Olive oil provides healthy fats and adds shine to a puppy’s coat.

Variations

Bake the sweet potato: You can bake the sweet potato in the oven if you prefer. Pierce it with a fork, wrap it in foil, and bake at 425⁰F for about 45 minutes until done.

Make a soft treat: Baking the full 30 minutes will produce a crunchy dog treat. Make a soft treat by reducing the cooking time to 12 minutes.

Storage Tips

Store the crunchy treats in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

Store the soft version in the fridge for 1 week. You can freeze any leftovers and thaw them at room temperature before feeding them to your dog.

How to Make them

Pierce the sweet potato and cook it in the microwave until tender.

Peel and mash the potato.

Add the egg, olive oil, and salt and mix everything up.

Add the flour and stir until a dough forms. This dough is easy and very forgiving. Using a whole sweet potato will make the measurements imprecise. This can change the consistency of the dough, depending on the size of the potato. If the dough is too wet, add more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time. Knead until the dough is workable.

Roll it out and use dog bone cookie cutters to cut into cute bone shapes.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 medium sweet potato
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour + more if needed
  • whole wheat flour for dusting.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350⁰F.
  2. Cook the sweet potato. Wash the sweet potato, then pierce it a few times to allow steam to vent. Microwave it for 5 minutes. Check to see if it can be easily pierced with a fork. If it is not fork tender, continue microwaving it in 30-second intervals until cooked. Allow the sweet potato to rest until cool enough to touch, then remove the peelings.
  3. Make the dough. Add the sweet potato to a large mixing bowl and mash it with a potato masher. Then add the egg, olive oil, and salt and mix until well combined. Stir in the flour until fully incorporated and a soft dough forms. If the dough is too wet, add more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time. Knead until the dough is workable.
  4. Roll the dough out to ¼ inch thick on a well-floured surface. Use a cookie cutter to cut into desired shapes.
  5. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 30 minutes. Allow to cool on a cooling rack. Share generously with your favorite furry friend.
